What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose an organization that matches why they are writing and who will read it. They use text features to guide readers and make information easier to understand.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students organize ideas with a structure such as sequence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, or problem and solution. They add features that help the intended reader, such as headings, captions, diagrams, or bullet points.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a structure because it is familiar, not because it fits the purpose. They may add headings, diagrams, or bold words that look appealing but do not help readers.
How to Assess It
- Give students facts about a school garden and ask them to create a one-page text for new students. Require a clear structure and two useful text features.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups mixed paragraph cards and feature cards, then have them build a clear article for a chosen audience.
Ask students to explain which structure and features would work best for teaching younger students how to care for a class pet.
Play Structure Match by pairing purpose cards with sequence, comparison, cause and effect, or problem and solution examples.
Have students redesign a school lunch notice for families, using headings, bullet points, and a simple chart to make details easy to find.
