What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine two texts about the same topic but written in different genres or for different purposes. They compare visible features and organization, then explain how those choices shape each text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately identify features and structures in two texts on one topic. They explain how those choices help each text inform, entertain, persuade, or guide the reader.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a text feature, such as a hyperlink, with a structure, such as chronological order. They may list differences without explaining how each choice fits the genre or purpose.
How to Assess It
- Give students a timeline article and a rhyming poem about weather. Ask them to name one structural difference and explain how each structure serves its text.

Ask students to write which text about recycling is easier to use for research and support their choice with two structural details.
Play Feature or Structure by displaying examples such as headings, hyperlinks, rhyme, and sequence for teams to classify and justify.
Compare a printed recipe with an online cooking guide, focusing on how numbered steps, icons, and links help different readers.
