What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide how to move a piece from an idea to a polished text. They adjust their process, content, structure, and language to fit the writing goal and intended readers.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose useful planning, drafting, feedback, revision, and editing moves for a specific assignment. Their final piece fits its goal and readers, with clear ideas, sound organization, and corrected errors.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat revision as proofreading, fixing commas and spelling without improving ideas or organization. They may follow the same steps for every task or ignore the intended reader when choosing details and tone.

How to Assess It

Give students a short, weak draft and name its intended reader. Ask them to make two revisions, one edit, and label the reason for each change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students a weak paragraph, colored pens, and revision cards; they reorganize ideas, strengthen evidence, and correct sentence-level errors.

  2. Ask students to explain which writing step they would use next on a stalled draft and why that choice fits the audience.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams improve one draft in rounds for focus, organization, evidence, style, and conventions.

  4. Have students write and revise a school club announcement for both ninth graders and parents, changing details, tone, and format.
