What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students shape writing for a clear purpose and a specific reader. They decide when to plan, draft, seek feedback, revise ideas, and correct errors. They adjust the process to fit each task.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can produce a story, explanation, or argument that fits its intended reader. Their revisions improve ideas, order, word choice, or clarity, not just spelling. They can explain why they used or skipped a process step.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every writing task follows the same fixed steps. They often confuse revising with correcting spelling and punctuation. Some name an audience but do not adjust details, tone, or word choice for that reader.

How to Assess It

Ask students to draft a three-sentence school announcement for sixth graders, revise it for parents, and label two changes made for the new audience.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students a cut-up draft and revision cards, then have teams reorder the draft and apply two changes for a named audience.

  2. Ask students to explain which writing step they would use next when a draft has strong ideas but confusing organization.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams draw audience, purpose, and problem cards, then improve one sentence to fit all three.

  4. Have students write and revise an email to the principal proposing one realistic change to a school routine.
