What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create different kinds of writing for specific readers and goals. They select and repeat planning, drafting, reviewing, revising, and editing steps as needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose useful planning, drafting, feedback, revision, and editing steps based on the assignment. Their final text fits its audience and purpose, with clear improvements between drafts.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat revision as fixing spelling rather than improving ideas, structure, and evidence. They may also use the same process for every task or ignore how audience and purpose should shape their choices.

How to Assess It

Give students a rough paragraph and ask them to make one meaningful revision and one edit. Have them label each change and explain its purpose.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students arrange process cards for a college essay, news article, and complaint email, then explain why each sequence differs.

  2. Ask students to compare two drafts and write which revision most improves the message for the intended audience.

  3. Run a revision relay where teams improve one paragraph for ideas, organization, word choice, and correctness in timed rounds.

  4. Students write an email to a school leader proposing a specific campus change, then revise it after peer feedback.
