What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft and judge how well it serves its purpose and audience. They use self-review and outside feedback to make meaningful changes to ideas, structure, details, wording, and technique.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can move sections, add needed support, remove repetition, sharpen wording, and adjust technique for a clear purpose. The student can explain why each change helps the audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat revision as proofreading for spelling and punctuation. They may accept every comment without judging whether it fits their purpose. They may replace words with synonyms while leaving weak ideas or organization unchanged.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to revise one paragraph after receiving feedback. They must mark two substantial changes and explain how each change improves the paragraph.

Ways to Teach It
Print drafts, cut paragraphs into strips, reorder them, then add transition notes before revising digitally.
Compare two revisions of one passage and write which better serves the audience, citing one specific change.
Play revision triage: teams sort feedback cards into use, adapt, or reject, then defend one decision.
Give students an unclear school announcement to revise for seniors, families, or staff by changing details, organization, and tone.
