What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students build possible content for writing from what they already know, what they learn from sources, and what others contribute. They compare these inputs and select ideas worth developing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student produces several focused, usable ideas before drafting. The student explains which ideas came from experience, research, or conversation and identifies details that still need verification.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat brainstorming as listing unsupported opinions. They may copy source details without connecting them to their own knowledge or ideas from discussion.

How to Assess It

Give students a topic and two short sources. Ask them to submit three possible claims, each supported by prior knowledge, a source detail, or a discussion insight.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort sticky notes labeled prior knowledge, source evidence, questions, and peer insights, then group them into possible writing angles.

  2. Ask students to write what they know, what they assume, and what they need to learn about a proposed topic.

  3. Run an idea relay where teams read a short text and add claims, evidence, questions, or counterpoints to a shared chart.

  4. Use a city council issue and ask students to gather resident comments, news details, and local knowledge before proposing an editorial angle.
