What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students develop writing ideas by connecting what they already know with information from texts and conversations. They sort, expand, and select ideas that fit their purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students produce several relevant ideas from their own knowledge, texts, and conversations. They can label each idea's source and select useful ideas for a clear writing purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat prior knowledge as proven fact or copy source ideas without adding their own thinking. They may also collect information without checking whether it fits the writing purpose.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article and ask them to list one idea from prior knowledge, one from the text, and one from a partner discussion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students sort sticky notes into three columns labeled prior knowledge, text evidence, and discussion ideas, then choose three notes for a draft.

  2. Ask, “Which source changed or sharpened your original thinking?” and have students explain their answer in four sentences.

  3. Play an idea relay where teams add one relevant idea from memory, a provided text, or peer comments to a shared topic chart.

  4. Students plan a school policy proposal by combining personal experience, information from the student handbook, and comments from two classmates.
