What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build ideas before drafting by using what they already know, details from reading, and useful points from conversations. They decide which ideas fit the purpose and topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a prompt and source text, a student records relevant ideas from memory, reading, and conversation. The student selects the strongest details and explains how each could support the writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy whole sentences from a source and call that planning. They may also treat prior knowledge or classmates’ opinions as verified facts without checking them.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article and a writing prompt. Ask them to list one relevant idea from memory, one source detail, and one useful point from a partner.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sticky notes to label Memory, Text, or Discussion, then sort possible details for a shared writing prompt.
Ask students, “Which idea changed or grew after reading and talking, and what caused that change?”
Run an Idea Relay where teams add one relevant detail from memory, a text, or discussion without repeating earlier ideas.
Plan a letter about improving school lunch by using personal experience, menu information, and comments from classmates.
