What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students reread a draft, find places that may confuse or lose readers, and choose useful feedback. They revise structure, details, wording, and writing techniques to improve the piece.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify weak spots in a draft and make changes beyond correcting errors. They can explain how each change improves clarity, flow, support, voice, or impact.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat revision as fixing spelling and punctuation or making a neat copy. They may accept every comment, add unrelated details, or choose complicated words that weaken clarity.

How to Assess It

Give students a weak paragraph and two peer comments. Ask them to revise three places and label how each change helps the reader.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Print a sample draft in paragraph strips; pairs rearrange, cut, or add strips, then explain how the new order helps readers.

  2. Display three feedback comments on one paragraph; students choose which to use first and write a reason for their choice.

  3. Give teams cards labeled add, delete, move, and replace; they draw one and improve a projected draft using that move.

  4. Compare early and final versions of a school announcement; students identify changes that make the directions clearer for families.
