What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students match ideas, examples, and evidence to specific parts of an outline or plan. They choose the strongest material for the purpose and leave out details that distract or repeat.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can place notes and evidence in the section where each will have the strongest effect. They can remove weak material and explain how each remaining detail supports the purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may include every fact they found, even when it does not support the main point. They may organize by source order instead of placing evidence where it best develops the piece.

How to Assess It

Give students six notes and a three-part outline. Ask them to place four notes under headings, cross out two, and justify one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups evidence cards and outline headings, then have them sort, rank, and remove cards that do not strengthen the planned piece.

  2. Ask students to explain which detail in a sample paragraph should stay, move, or be cut, citing the writer’s purpose.

  3. Run an Evidence Draft game where teams draw fact cards and earn points by placing each under the strongest outline heading.

  4. Have students plan a school policy email by selecting survey results and examples that will best persuade the principal.
