What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify who will listen and why they are speaking. They choose clear words, an audible voice, and helpful pictures or objects for that audience and purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give a brief presentation that stays on topic and fits the listeners. The student speaks clearly, uses an appropriate tone, and answers a simple audience question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use the same words and volume for every audience. They may face the poster instead of listeners, read every word, or add details that do not fit the purpose.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student to recommend a favorite classroom book to a new first grader in 30 seconds, using one picture. Check for clear speech, relevant details, and listener-friendly words.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a classroom object and an audience card, such as kindergartners or teachers, then have them explain how to use it.
Ask students to compare how they would invite a friend and the principal to a class play, then list words they would change.
Play Audience Switch: students draw a purpose and listener card, give a 20-second message, and classmates name one fitting choice.
Have students record a morning announcement for families, using a greeting, one clear fact, and a polite closing.
