What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and give a short presentation for a named audience and purpose. They adjust their words, details, voice, and visuals so listeners can understand and respond.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can present the same topic differently to classmates, younger children, or adults. The student uses clear words, relevant details, suitable volume, and helpful visuals to meet the purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think speaking loudly is the only presentation skill that matters. They may use the same words and details for every audience. Some read every word from a page or add visuals that distract from the message.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Explain recess safety to kindergarten students in 30 seconds, then name one change you would make when speaking to the principal.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups audience and purpose cards, then have them prepare a one-minute talk about the same school event while classmates identify both.
Write two openings about a class pet, one to inform first graders and one to persuade the principal, then compare word choices.
Play Audience Switch: students speak on a topic, draw a new audience card, and revise their next sentence immediately.
Record a 30-second message inviting families to the book fair, using clear details and a polite call to action.
