What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask a focused historical question, gather useful evidence, and identify who created each source, when, and why. They compare accounts, judge credibility, and support a conclusion with cited details.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given conflicting accounts, students correctly classify sources as primary or secondary and explain each source's point of view. They form a clear claim and support it with evidence from more than one source.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume primary sources are always accurate or that bias makes a source useless. They may summarize sources without comparing them, checking context, or connecting evidence to a claim.

How to Assess It

Give students two short accounts of the same event. Ask: “Which account is more useful for answering this question, and what two source details support your choice?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Sort printed letters, photographs, textbook excerpts, and maps into primary and secondary source groups, then label each creator, audience, and purpose.

  2. Write a response to: “Can a biased source still be useful to a historian? Explain with one example from today’s source set.”

  3. Play Source Detective by awarding points for identifying creator, date, purpose, point of view, and corroborating evidence on source cards.

  4. Compare a local historical marker with a newspaper archive article, then list what each includes, leaves out, or presents differently.
