Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students touch or move each object once while saying number words in order. They use the last number said to tell how many objects are in the group.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student organizes or tracks objects so each one is counted once. The student states the correct total and gets the same total when the objects are rearranged.
Common Misconceptions: Students may skip objects, count one object twice, or say number words out of order. They may think rearranging the same objects changes the total. Some repeat the whole count instead of using the last number said as the total.
How to Assess It: Place 12 counters in a scattered group and ask, “How many counters are there? Show how you know.” Watch for one-to-one counting and an accurate total.

Lesson moves

Give pairs 15 buttons and an egg carton, then have them move and count each button into one space.
Show a scattered set and ask, “How could you count these without skipping any or counting one twice?”
Play Roll and Build, where students roll a die, count out that many cubes, and compare towers.
Set up a snack station where students count the exact number of crackers needed for each classmate.
