- MA.2.FR.1.2
Partition rectangles into two, three or four equal-sized parts in two different ways showing that equal-sized parts of the same whole may have different shapes.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize and make equal shares of one whole or a group. They name common fractions and describe how many equal parts form the whole.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students divide shapes into equal parts and name halves, thirds, and fourths. They explain that equal shares of the same whole must be the same size.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call any piece a fraction, even when the whole is not divided into equal parts. They may think a larger denominator means larger pieces or count dividing lines instead of parts.
How to Assess It
- Give students three shapes partitioned in different ways. Ask them to circle the shape showing fourths, shade one fourth, and explain how they know.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs paper circles to fold into halves, thirds, and fourths, then label each equal part.
Show two differently partitioned rectangles and ask, "Which shows fair shares, and what proves the shares are equal?"
Play Fraction Match with cards showing fraction words, shaded shapes, and sets divided into equal groups.
Plan how to share one sandwich, pizza, or granola bar equally among two, three, or four people.
