What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students divide circles, squares, and rectangles into two or four equal parts. They name the parts as halves or fourths and check that all shares are equal.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can draw or fold a shape into two or four equal parts and label the parts correctly. They can identify equal shares even when shapes are divided in different ways.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count pieces without checking whether the pieces are equal in size. They may also think only vertical or horizontal lines can make equal shares.
How to Assess It
- On an exit slip, ask students to partition one rectangle into halves and another into fourths. Have them label one half and one fourth.

Ways to Teach It
Give students paper squares to fold into halves two ways and fourths two ways, then trace folds and label parts.
Display two differently partitioned rectangles and ask, "Which shows fair shares, and how do you know?"
Students sort cards into halves, fourths, and unequal groups, then justify one card to a partner.
Cut a sandwich picture into two fair shares and a brownie pan picture into four, then label each share.
