What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize and create equivalent fractions, then compare fractions with different numerators and denominators. They connect fractions in tenths and hundredths to decimal notation using models and place value.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can generate equivalent fractions and compare two fractions using models, benchmarks, or common denominators. They can write tenths and hundredths as decimals and explain the connection using place value.

Common Misconceptions

Students may multiply only the numerator or denominator when making equivalent fractions. They may think a larger denominator means a larger fraction. They may read 0.4 as four hundredths or claim 0.35 is greater than 0.5 because 35 is greater than 5.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: Shade 6/10 on a grid, write it as a decimal, name an equivalent hundredths fraction, and compare it with 3/4. Require a drawing or sentence to justify the comparison.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build 3/4 with fraction strips, then cover it with smaller pieces to find and record equivalent fractions.

  2. Ask, “Which is greater, 5/8 or 3/4?” and have students defend an answer with a drawing and written explanation.

  3. Play a matching game with cards showing fractions, decimals, shaded grids, and number line points.

  4. Use price tags such as $0.45 and $0.70, then write each amount as a fraction of one dollar and compare them.
