What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students model sharing one unit fraction among equal groups and finding how many unit fractions fit in a whole number. They connect each quotient to multiplication and explain why it is reasonable.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can solve 1/3 ÷ 4 = 1/12 and 3 ÷ 1/4 = 12 using labeled models and equations. They explain what each quotient means and check it with multiplication.

Common Misconceptions

Students may believe division always makes a number smaller. They may reverse the divisor and dividend, or divide only the denominator without explaining why.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: Draw a model and solve 1/2 ÷ 3 and 2 ÷ 1/3. Write a multiplication equation to check each answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Fold a paper strip showing 1/2 into three equal shares, then label each share and write the matching division equation.

  2. Ask students to explain why 4 ÷ 1/2 is greater than 4, using words, a picture, and an equation.

  3. Play a matching game with division expressions, visual models, quotients, and related multiplication equations on separate cards.

  4. Use measuring cups to determine how many 1/4-cup servings fill two cups, then model and solve the division equation.
