What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write a whole-number division expression as a fraction. They connect the number being divided to the numerator and the number of equal groups to the denominator.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student correctly writes 7 ÷ 3 as 7/3 and identifies 7 as the amount shared and 3 as the number of groups. The student can use a drawing or context to explain the quotient.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the numerator and denominator, writing 4/3 for 3 ÷ 4. They may also think a quotient must be a whole number or treat the fraction bar as decoration.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Seven sandwiches are shared equally among four students. Write each student’s share as a fraction and explain what each number means.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use three paper strips as granola bars, share them equally among four students, and record 3 ÷ 4 = 3/4.

  2. Ask students to explain why 5 ÷ 2 equals 5/2 using words, a drawing, or both.

  3. Play a card match game pairing division expressions, fraction forms, and equal-sharing pictures.

  4. Plan how six pizzas could be shared equally among eight tables, then write each table’s share as a fraction.
