What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide when a real-world situation calls for multiplying a fraction and a whole number. They represent the situation with an equation or visual model, calculate the product, and label the answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students solve one-step situations involving equal groups of a fraction or a fractional part of a whole-number amount. They use a model or equation and express products greater than one as fractions or mixed numbers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply both the numerator and denominator by the whole number, such as writing 3 × 1/4 = 3/12. They may also add instead of multiply or ignore what the product means in the problem.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Each batch of muffins needs 3/4 cup of milk. How much milk is needed for 5 batches?” Ask for an equation, model, and labeled answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give students fraction strips to build five groups of 2/3, combine the pieces, and record the product as a fraction and mixed number.
Ask students to respond to: “Maya says 4 × 2/5 = 8/20.” Explain her error using words and a model.
Students draw a whole-number card and fraction card, multiply them, then earn a point by matching the product to a model card.
Give pairs a recipe using 2/3 cup of oats per batch and have them calculate amounts for three, four, and six batches.
