What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether a situation calls for addition or subtraction. They calculate with like-size fractional parts, including mixed numbers and amounts greater than one, then label the answer.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the correct operation and represent the situation with an equation or model. They accurately regroup mixed numbers, simplify when needed, and give a labeled, reasonable answer.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add or subtract denominators instead of keeping the common denominator. They may forget to regroup one whole when subtracting a larger fractional part. Some choose an operation from a keyword without considering the situation.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A pitcher held 4 1/6 cups of juice. Mia poured out 2 5/6 cups. How much remains? Show an equation and your work.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use fraction strips to model 2 5/8 plus 1 6/8, trading eight eighths for one whole before recording the equation.

  2. Ask students to explain why 5 2/7 minus 3 6/7 requires regrouping, using a labeled drawing and two sentences.

  3. Have pairs match story cards with equation cards and solution cards, then check each match using fraction bars.

  4. Give students a recipe card and ask them to find the total amount of two like-denominator ingredients or the amount left.
