What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine or separate equal-sized fractional parts while keeping the denominator the same. They work with proper fractions, fractions greater than one, and mixed numbers. They regroup a whole when subtraction requires it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students calculate accurately with proper fractions, fractions greater than one, and mixed numbers that have matching denominators. They regroup when needed and express answers in the requested form.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add or subtract the denominators instead of keeping the unit size unchanged. They may ignore the whole numbers or fail to regroup one whole when the top fractional part is smaller. Some convert between mixed numbers and fractions greater than one incorrectly.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Solve 7/8 + 6/8 and 3 1/4 − 1 3/4. Write each answer as a fraction greater than one and a mixed number, then show any regrouping.

Ways to Teach It
Use fraction strips to build 1 3/4 + 2 2/4, combine the pieces, and record the sum as an improper fraction and mixed number.
Ask students to explain why 7/8 − 3/8 keeps eighths and changes only the number of eighths.
Play a matching game with equation cards and answer cards, including improper fractions, mixed numbers, and subtraction that requires regrouping.
Give recipe amounts, such as 2 1/3 cups plus 1 2/3 cups, and have students calculate the total amount.
