What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find products of two fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numbers. They convert mixed numbers when needed, multiply accurately, simplify, and check whether the answer makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly convert mixed numbers, multiply numerators and denominators, and simplify. They use models or estimates to check whether products are reasonable, including products greater than 1.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply numerators but add denominators, or multiply whole-number and fraction parts separately. They may forget to convert mixed numbers or simplify the final product. Some expect multiplication always to make a number larger.
How to Assess It
- Ask: “Solve 1 1/2 × 4/5. Show each step, simplify the product, and explain whether your answer is reasonable.”

Ways to Teach It
Fold a paper rectangle into thirds vertically and fourths horizontally, then shade overlapping parts to model 2/3 × 3/4.
Ask students to explain why 3/4 × 2/3 is smaller than either factor, using a model or words.
Give pairs task cards with fraction products and mixed-number products, then have partners solve, simplify, and check each other’s work.
Calculate how much flour is needed for 1 1/2 batches when one batch uses 3/4 cup of flour.
