What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students multiply and divide positive fractions and mixed numbers accurately. They convert mixed numbers to improper fractions, use reciprocals when dividing, and simplify their answers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student computes products and quotients accurately without models or calculators. The work shows correct mixed-number conversions, use of reciprocals for division, and simplified answers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply addition rules and look for common denominators before multiplying. They may invert the first fraction, forget to convert mixed numbers, or fail to simplify the final answer.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Compute 2 1/4 ÷ 3/5 and 1 2/3 × 3/8. Show each conversion and give simplified answers.

Ways to Teach It
Use fraction strips to model 3/4 × 2/3 and 3/4 ÷ 1/8, then match each model to an equation.
Write a response to: Why does dividing by 2/3 produce a larger answer than dividing by 3/2?
Play Fraction Face-Off: pairs draw two fraction or mixed-number cards and an operation card, then score for a correct simplified result.
Use a recipe card to find 2 1/2 batches of an ingredient and the number of 3/4-cup servings available.
