What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add and subtract positive and negative whole numbers accurately and efficiently. They use number lines or counters to build meaning, then apply reliable sign rules and procedures.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately add and subtract positive and negative integers, including expressions with two negative signs. They can rewrite subtraction as adding the opposite and use that step without relying on a model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add absolute values even when the signs differ. They may choose the answer’s sign from the first number instead of the greater absolute value. Some think subtraction always makes a number smaller or mishandle subtracting a negative.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with −7 + 12, 6 − 14, −9 − (−4), and −3 + (−8). Ask students to solve all four and explain one answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs red and yellow counters to model six integer expressions, then have students write and solve the matching equations.
Ask, “Why does subtracting a negative have the same result as adding a positive?” Students explain with a number line example.
Play integer equation bingo using teacher-called expressions such as −8 + 3 and 5 − (−6), with solved values on student cards.
Track daily temperature changes for one week, then write and solve integer expressions showing each rise or drop.
