What Students Need to Do
- Students use objects, drawings, fingers, and numbers to show groups being joined or taken apart. They find how many there are altogether or how many remain.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students model joining and taking apart with objects, fingers, drawings, or equations. They find an accurate result and explain what changed in the set.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count both sets but forget to combine them, or remove objects and count the ones taken away. They may treat the plus and minus signs as interchangeable or reverse the numbers in a subtraction equation.
How to Assess It
- Give students 7 counters and say, “Show 7 minus 3, then draw what you did and complete 7 − 3 = ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs ten counters and story cards, then have them build each joining or taking-away story and state the result.
Ask, “How are 5 + 2 and 7 − 2 connected?” Students draw both and explain their thinking to a partner.
Play equation match with cards showing stories, pictures, and equations; students find three cards that represent the same situation.
Set up a pretend snack table where students add or remove crackers, then tell how many remain after each change.
