MA.3.NSO.2 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.

  Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers including using a standard algorithm with procedural fluency.

• MA.3.NSO.2.2

  Explore multiplication of two whole numbers with products from 0 to 144, and related division facts.

• MA.3.NSO.2.3

  Multiply a one-digit whole number by a multiple of 10, up to 90, or a multiple of 100, up to 900, with procedural reliability.

• MA.3.NSO.2.4

  Multiply two whole numbers from 0 to 12 and divide using related facts with procedural reliability.

What Students Need to Do

Students use place value and regrouping to find sums and differences for numbers with several digits. They model equal groups, arrays, and sharing, then connect those models to multiplication and division equations.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student accurately adds and subtracts numbers with several place values and checks whether the answer is reasonable. They represent equal groups, arrays, and sharing with equations. They use related multiplication and division facts to solve problems.

Common Misconceptions

Students may align numbers by the left edge instead of by place value, or lose a regrouped unit across zeros. They may think multiplication always makes a number larger. In division, they often confuse the number of groups with the number in each group.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: solve 2,684 + 1,759 and 5,002 − 1,476, then draw a model and write the fact family for 7 groups of 8.

   Use base-ten blocks to model 2,346 + 1,587 and 3,204 − 768, recording each trade beside the written calculation.

   Ask, "How are 6 × 8 and 48 ÷ 6 connected?" Students draw an array and explain the relationship in writing.
