What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit whole numbers and decimals using place value and reliable written methods. They estimate, interpret remainders, and check whether answers make sense.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student computes accurately with whole numbers and decimals, showing regrouping, partial products, and quotient steps clearly. They estimate first and use inverse operations to check their work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often line up digits instead of decimal points when adding or subtracting. In multiplication, they may misalign partial products. In division, they may place quotient digits incorrectly or leave a remainder larger than the divisor.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: solve 48.306 + 7.958, 60.000 − 27.684, 326 × 47, and 8,736 ÷ 24. Circle one answer and show how you checked it.

Ways to Teach It
Use place-value disks to model 2,346 + 1,785 and 4,002 − 1,678, then connect each trade to the written algorithm.
Ask students to solve 3,216 ÷ 24, then write why multiplying the quotient by 24 checks the result.
Run a card sort where students match multi-digit computation cards with estimates, exact answers, and explanations of errors.
Give students a school-supply budget, item quantities, and prices, then have them calculate total costs, change, and equal shares.
