Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.6.NSO.2 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.6.NSO.2.1
Multiply and divide positive multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousandths, including using a standard algorithm with procedural fluency.
- MA.6.NSO.2.2
Extend previous understanding of multiplication and division to compute products and quotients of positive fractions by positive fractions, including mixed numb...
- MA.6.NSO.2.3
Solve multi-step real-world problems involving any of the four operations with positive multi-digit decimals or positive fractions, including mixed numbers.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find sums, differences, products, and quotients using positive fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers. They choose suitable methods and check answers with estimates or models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately solves problems with fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers. They show clear steps, simplify fractions, and use estimation to check whether answers are reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add denominators, misalign decimal places, or forget to convert mixed numbers before multiplying. They may invert the wrong fraction when dividing or assume every quotient is smaller.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Compute 2.75 + 1.6, 5/6 − 1/4, 2 1/3 × 3/5, and 3/4 ÷ 1/8. Circle one answer and explain why it is reasonable.

Ways to Teach It
Use fraction strips to model 3/4 + 1/2 and 3/4 ÷ 1/2, then write equations matching each model.
Ask students to explain why dividing 3/4 by 1/8 gives a result greater than 3/4.
Play a card game where students draw two fraction or decimal cards, choose an operation, and earn points for correct solutions.
Give students a recipe for four servings and have them calculate ingredient amounts for six servings and two servings.
