What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate with positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals using all four operations. They choose efficient written methods, track signs carefully, and simplify exact answers.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately solve problems with signed integers, fractions, and decimals. They simplify results, show efficient steps, and use estimation or inverse operations to check answers.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply the multiplication sign rule to addition and assume two negative numbers always produce a positive result. They may ignore operation order, use unlike denominators directly, or place decimals incorrectly when dividing.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Compute −3.5 + 1.8, 5/6 − (−1/4), (−2/3)(9/5), and −4.2 ÷ 0.7. Simplify each answer.

Ways to Teach It
Use red and yellow integer chips to model signed addition and subtraction, then match each model to a numerical equation.
Ask students to write: Why is subtracting a negative equivalent to adding a positive? Include a number-line example.
Play Operation Draw: students draw two signed rational cards and an operation card, compute, then earn a point for a correct simplified answer.
Have students calculate a mock account balance after deposits, withdrawals, four equal fees, and splitting the remainder among three savings goals.
