Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.7.NSO.2 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.7.NSO.2.1
Solve mathematical problems using multi-step order of operations with rational numbers including grouping symbols, whole-number exponents and absolute value.
- MA.7.NSO.2.2
Add, subtract, multiply and divide rational numbers with procedural fluency.
- MA.7.NSO.2.3
Solve real-world problems involving any of the four operations with rational numbers.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate with positive and negative fractions, decimals, and integers. They apply sign rules, find common denominators when needed, and use reciprocals to divide fractions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student accurately calculates with mixed forms, including negative fractions and decimals. They show useful steps, simplify fractions, and check whether the sign and size of each answer make sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think subtraction always makes a number smaller, so they mishandle subtracting a negative. They may use multiplication sign rules for addition, flip the wrong fraction during division, or misalign decimal places.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: compute −3/4 + 5/8, 2.6 − (−1.9), (−4/5)(15/8), and −3.6 ÷ 0.9, then explain one answer's sign.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs red and black counters, then have them model integer sums and differences before matching each model to an equation.
Have students answer the prompt, “Why does subtracting a negative increase the value?” using an equation and a number line.
Run a four-corner game where students solve one rational-number problem, then move to the corner labeled with the correct answer.
Give a bank balance of $18.50, three $7.25 purchases, and a $10 deposit, then ask students to find the final balance.
