What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students translate gains, losses, deposits, temperatures, and fractional amounts into calculations with positive and negative numbers. They choose the needed operations and interpret each answer in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a multistep situation, students write a correct expression, calculate accurately with fractions or decimals, and label the result. They explain why each operation fits and check whether the sign and size make sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat every negative sign as subtraction or apply sign rules incorrectly. They may add denominators, lose a negative during division, or choose an operation from a keyword alone. They may also give an unlabeled number that does not answer the question.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: An account balance is -$12.50. You deposit $30, then pay one third of a $9.75 group charge. Find the new balance, show one expression, and label the answer.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs place transaction cards on a floor number line, then calculate each balance change with signed decimals.
Have students write why subtracting 5 from -3 models a temperature drop of 5°C from -3°C.
Play Rational Number Match: students pair 12 situation cards with expression cards, solve each one, and score only for labeled answers.
Give students a one-week bank statement with deposits, fees, and shared charges, then have them calculate and explain the ending balance.
