What Students Need to Do
- Students solve real-world problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers. They decide which operations to use and complete one or two connected steps.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct operations and solve one-step and two-step problems accurately. They write equations, label answers, and explain how each calculation matches the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation from a keyword without considering the situation. They may solve two-step problems in the wrong order, skip a step, or confuse sharing with grouping in division.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A teacher buys 6 boxes of 8 markers and gives away 17 markers. How many remain? Show both steps.”

Give pairs 48 counters and task cards that require them to model multiplication, division, addition, or subtraction before writing equations.
