What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide which operations fit a word problem and complete the steps in a sensible order. They explain what any remainder means and use it correctly in the final answer. They check that the answer fits the situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students organize the given information, choose the needed operations, and show each step clearly. They interpret a remainder as leftovers, an extra group, or unused space based on the situation. Their final answer includes a label and makes sense in context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may calculate from left to right instead of using the problem situation to choose an order. They may drop a remainder, write it as a decimal, or always round up without considering what it represents. They may also answer an intermediate step instead of the question asked.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A camp has 187 campers. Vans hold 8 campers and cost $46 each. What is the total van cost?” Require an equation and one sentence explaining the remainder.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs 157 counters and paper cups, then have them pack 12 per cup and calculate the cost of all needed cups.

  2. Ask students to explain when a remainder of 3 should be ignored, reported as leftovers, or used to add another group.

  3. Play Remainder Sort with problem cards, sorting each answer under Round Up, Keep the Remainder, or Use Full Groups Only.

  4. Plan buses and lunches for 143 students using bus capacities, lunch pack sizes, and prices from a teacher-made rate sheet.
