What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve one-step and multi-step problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They work with whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers, then explain why their operations fit the situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct operations, solve in a sensible order, and show each step. They check whether the answer is reasonable and label it with the correct unit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an operation from a keyword instead of the situation. They may add denominators, mishandle mixed numbers, or ignore what a remainder means in context.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A baker has 8 cups of flour and uses 3/4 cup for each of 6 loaves. She shares the remaining flour equally among 7 containers. How much goes in each container? Show your equations.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips and counters to model a two-step sharing problem, then have them write equations matching their model.
Ask students to explain why 3/4 multiplied by 8 fits a recipe problem better than 3/4 added to 8.
Play operation sort: students draw word-problem cards, name the needed operation, solve, and earn a point for a reasonable explanation.
Use a classroom snack recipe, adjust it for different group sizes, and calculate how much remains after serving everyone.
