What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify each step in a real-world situation and choose the operations that fit. They calculate with positive decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers, then interpret the result with units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write a sequence of equations that matches the situation and reach an accurate answer. They label units and check that the result is reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply operations in the order numbers appear instead of following the situation. They may misalign decimal points, invert the wrong fraction, or mishandle mixed numbers.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A baker has 6 1/2 cups of flour and uses 1 1/4 cups for each of 4 batches. How much remains?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips to model 5 1/2 yards of ribbon, then cut, combine, and compare pieces using task cards.
Ask students to explain which operation comes first in a two-step shopping problem and defend their choice in three sentences.
Play a card sort where teams match word problems, operation sequences, estimates, and exact answers.
Use a grocery receipt to calculate item totals, discounts, shared costs, and remaining money with positive decimals.
