What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether a quantity is being shared into equal parts or measured in fractional groups. They represent the situation, divide, and explain the answer using the context.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the correct division equation from a context and find the quotient accurately. They use a tape diagram, fraction strips, or a number line to show why the answer makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the dividend and divisor because the two problem types sound similar. They may assume division always makes a number smaller. Some divide denominators without considering what the quantities mean.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Three cups of rice are packed into 1/4-cup servings. How many servings are made? Draw a model and write an equation.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs fraction strips to split 1/2 into three equal shares, then label each share and write the matching equation.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why 4 divided by 1/3 is greater than 4.

  3. Students draw whole-number and unit-fraction cards, choose the division order, solve, and earn a point for an accurate model.

  4. Plan snack bags using 3 cups of cereal and 1/4-cup portions, then calculate how many bags can be filled.
