What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students decide whether a real-world situation requires adding, subtracting, or multiplying fractions. They solve with fractions greater than 1 and mixed numbers, then explain what the answer means.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects the correct operation, writes an equation, and solves accurately. The student handles common denominators, regrouping, and mixed numbers, then labels the answer to match the context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add denominators when adding fractions or subtract smaller numerators from larger ones without regrouping. They may multiply mixed numbers before rewriting them as fractions. Some choose an operation from keywords without checking the situation.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “A bakery uses 1 1/2 cups of flour per batch. How much flour is needed for 2 1/3 batches?” Require an equation and explanation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use fraction strips to model 1 3/4 plus 2 2/3, then connect the model to a common-denominator equation.

  2. Ask students to write why multiplying, rather than adding, solves: Each banner uses 2 1/4 yards for three banners.

  3. Play a card match game where students pair fraction word problems with equations, solve them, and check matches with a partner.

  4. Scale a simple pancake recipe by 1 1/2, listing the new amount needed for each fractional ingredient.
