What Students Need to Do: Students simplify numerical radicals, identify like radical terms, and apply the four operations. They use radical properties correctly and write exact simplified results.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students simplify radicals before operating and combine only like radical terms. They produce exact answers, such as 3√8 − √18 = 3√2 and √6 × √24 = 12.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write √a + √b as √(a + b), or combine radicals with different radicands. They may cancel terms across addition, mishandle coefficients, or miss perfect-square factors.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: Simplify √12 + √27, 3√8 − √18, √6 × √24, and √75 ÷ √3. Require one intermediate step for each.

Lesson moves

Give groups cards showing radical expressions and simplified forms, then have them match each expression to its equivalent result.
Ask students to correct the claim √12 + √3 = √15 and explain the error in two sentences.
Play a partner sorting game where students classify radical problems by operation, solve them, and check answers with a key.
Find and add the diagonals of square patios with side lengths 2 meters and 3 meters, keeping the total in exact form.
