What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students factor polynomials, find common denominators, and use reciprocals to combine rational expressions. They simplify common factors and record values that make an original denominator zero.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given mixed operations, a student chooses the correct procedure and produces an equivalent simplified expression. The work shows factoring, common denominators, and reciprocal use where needed. The student states all excluded values from the original expressions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often add or subtract denominators instead of finding a common denominator. They cancel terms within sums rather than canceling common factors. They may forget to use the reciprocal when dividing or omit excluded values from the original expressions.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Simplify ((x^2 - 9)/(x^2 - 3x)) ÷ ((x + 3)/x^2) + 1/x, and list every excluded value. Look for (x^2 + 1)/x with x ≠ -3, 0, or 3, plus clear factoring and reciprocal steps.

Ways to Teach It
Give students algebra factor cards to build products such as (x + 2)(x - 3), then remove matching numerator and denominator cards.
Ask, "Why can (x^2 - 9)/(x - 3) simplify, but (x^2 - 9)/(x - 2) cannot?" Require a two-sentence justification.
Run a four-corner relay with one station each for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including an excluded-value check at every station.
Model combined work rates with 1/a + 1/b, then have students explain how the common denominator represents both workers' times.
