What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students evaluate multi-step expressions with positive and negative rational numbers in the correct sequence. They handle grouping symbols, powers, absolute values, and fraction or decimal operations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student gets the correct value and writes one valid simplification per line. They apply exponents to the stated base and treat absolute value as distance from zero.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may calculate strictly left to right, ignoring grouping symbols and exponents. They often confuse (−3)² with −3². Some treat absolute value as making every number positive before calculating.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Evaluate 2|−3/2| + [(1/2)² − 3/4] ÷ (−1/2), showing one step per line. The correct value is 4.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs number, operation, and grouping cards; have them build an expression, swap with another pair, and check each evaluation.
Post two worked solutions for 3 − 2|−4| + (−2)²; students identify the first disagreement and defend the correct step in writing.
Run an expression relay where teams complete one valid step per turn and lose a point for changing more than one operation.
Have students calculate a checking-account balance after a deposit, two equal withdrawals, a fee, and a refund using one expression.
