What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students perform all four operations with numbers written in scientific notation. They align powers of ten when needed, apply exponent rules, and write answers in normalized form.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct steps for each operation and calculate accurately. They match exponents for addition and subtraction, use exponent rules for multiplication and division, and normalize every answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add exponents when adding numbers instead of first matching powers of ten. They may apply exponent rules incorrectly during division. They may also leave coefficients outside the range from 1 to 10.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: calculate and write each answer in scientific notation: (3.2 × 10^5) + (4.7 × 10^4), (6.0 × 10^-3) - (2.5 × 10^-3), (2 × 10^4)(3 × 10^-2), and (8 × 10^6) ÷ (4 × 10^2).

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs coefficient cards and exponent cards, then have them build, combine, and normalize scientific notation expressions.
Ask students to explain why 3 × 10^5 and 4 × 10^4 cannot be added by combining coefficients and exponents.
Run a card sort where students match scientific notation expressions, operation steps, and normalized answers.
Have students calculate with astronomy distances, bacteria counts, or computer file sizes written in scientific notation.
