What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find products and quotients involving 0.1 and 0.01. They track how each digit’s value changes and place the decimal accurately.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students calculate accurately and place the decimal correctly without relying on a model. They use place-value reasoning or estimation to explain why a product is smaller or a quotient is larger.

Common Misconceptions

Students may move the decimal point without connecting the move to place value, or move it in the wrong direction. Some think division always makes a number smaller, so they reject a larger quotient.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: “Solve 46.3 × 0.1 and 46.3 ÷ 0.01 without a calculator. Show place-value reasoning for each answer.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Move place-value disks for 32.6 across a chart to model multiplying and dividing by 0.1 and 0.01.

  2. Ask, “Why is 48.2 ÷ 0.1 greater than 48.2?” Students write two sentences and compare explanations.

  3. Play Decimal Target: students draw number cards, choose multiplication or division by 0.1 or 0.01, and score for reaching target ranges.

  4. Find how many 0.1-meter and 0.01-meter pieces can be cut from a 12.5-meter roll of ribbon.
