What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the place being rounded and check the digit immediately to its right. They decide whether to keep or increase the target digit, then replace or remove later digits correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly round a decimal to any requested place and write the result with accurate place value. They can name the deciding digit and explain whether the target digit stays or increases.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may check the wrong digit or round every digit to the right. They may change digits that should stay fixed. Some students treat a trailing zero as changing the value.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Round 47.386 to the nearest hundredth, tenth, and whole number. Circle the digit used to make each rounding decision.

Ways to Teach It
Build 6.347 with digit cards on a place-value mat, then physically cover digits as students round to each requested place.
Ask students to explain why 8.449 rounds to 8.45 to the nearest hundredth but 8.4 to the nearest tenth.
Play Rounding Match: students pair decimal cards with whole-number, tenth, and hundredth cards, then justify one match to a partner.
Give students race times measured to thousandths of a second and have them report each to the nearest hundredth, tenth, and whole second.
