Benchmarks in This Standard
MA.5.NSO.1 is a B.E.S.T. standard. These are the benchmarks under it.
- MA.5.NSO.1.1
Express how the value of a digit in a multi-digit number with decimals to the thousandths changes if the digit moves one or more places to the left or right.
- MA.5.NSO.1.2
Read and write multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousandths using standard form, word form and expanded form.
- MA.5.NSO.1.3
Compose and decompose multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousandths in multiple ways using the values of the digits in each place. Demonstrate the compos...
- MA.5.NSO.1.4
Plot, order and compare multi-digit numbers with decimals up to the thousandths.
- MA.5.NSO.1.5
Round multi-digit numbers with decimals to the thousandths to the nearest hundredth, tenth or whole number.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the place and value of digits in whole numbers and decimals through thousandths. They read, write, model, and break apart these numbers using place-value relationships.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly read, write, and model numbers through thousandths. They can explain that each place is ten times the value of the place to its right.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think more decimal digits always make a number larger. They may confuse tenths, hundredths, and thousandths or ignore zeros used as placeholders.
How to Assess It
- Give students 47.306. Ask them to name the place and value of each decimal digit, then write the number in expanded form.

Ways to Teach It
Have students place digit cards on a labeled place-value mat, then read the number and write its expanded form.
Ask students to explain why 4.205 and 4.25 are different, including what the zero does.
Roll dice to build decimals through thousandths, then compare numbers with a partner and score one point for each correct comparison.
Give three race times measured to thousandths and have students order them, then identify the value of a chosen digit.
