What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students move among numeral notation, number names, and place-value sums for numbers that include thousandths. They identify each digit’s value, including zeros used as placeholders.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can change 508.072 into a number name and a place-value sum without changing its value. They preserve placeholder zeros and name each decimal place correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may ignore placeholder zeros, so they read 4.006 as 4.6. They may also confuse tenths, hundredths, and thousandths or use “and” before the whole-number part.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write “seven hundred two and forty-five thousandths” as a numeral and as a place-value sum.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs digit cards and a place-value mat; call out 42.307, then have them build it and record two other forms.
Ask, “How are 6.04 and 6.004 different?” Students write a claim using place-value names, then compare explanations with a partner.
Use matching cards showing numerals, number names, and expanded sums; teams race to assemble complete sets and justify each match.
Show race times recorded to thousandths; students write each time in words and expanded form, then identify the fastest runner.
