What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read numbers through 1,000 and write each number in three forms. They use hundreds, tens, and ones to show the value of every digit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can move accurately among standard, expanded, and word forms. The student keeps zero placeholders and matches each digit to its place value.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write 406 as 46 or expand it as 400 + 6 without showing the zero tens. They may use digit names in word form, such as “four zero six,” instead of “four hundred six.”
How to Assess It
- Give students the number 582. Ask them to write it in expanded form and word form, then label each digit’s place.

Ask students to explain in writing why 307 is not the same as 37.
Play a matching game with cards showing the same number in standard, expanded, and word forms.
Use a store flyer and ask students to rewrite three prices under $1,000 in expanded and word forms.
