What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read numbers through 100 shown as numerals, sums of place values, or number words. They write a given number as a numeral and as tens plus ones.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student reads standard, expanded, and word forms accurately through 100. The student writes a spoken or written number in standard and expanded form, including numbers with zero ones.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse digits, read 14 as forty-one, or confuse forty with fourteen. They may write 42 as 4 + 2 instead of 40 + 2. Numbers with zero, such as 50 and 100, can cause confusion.

How to Assess It

Show 36, 30 + 6, and thirty-six, then ask students to read each aloud. Say “eighty-two” and have them write 82 and 80 + 2.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build numbers with base-ten blocks, then write each number in standard form, expanded form, and words on a recording sheet.

  2. Ask students to explain how 47 and 40 + 7 show the same number.

  3. Play a matching game using cards showing standard form, expanded form, and word form for the same numbers.

  4. Count classroom supplies, then label each total in standard form, expanded form, and word form.
