What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read large whole numbers by grouping digits into periods. They write the same number in standard, expanded, and word forms while keeping zeros in the correct places.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately convert a number among standard, expanded, and word forms. They preserve placeholder zeros and explain each digit’s value based on its position.

Common Misconceptions

Students may leave out zeros that hold a place, writing 46,72 for 406,072. They may confuse a digit with its value or misread periods such as thousands and millions.

How to Assess It

Give students 508,036. Ask them to write it in word form and expanded form, then circle the digit worth 8,000.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs place-value mats and digit cards to build 406,072, then record the number in standard, expanded, and word forms.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing why the zeros in 702,045 cannot be removed.

  3. Play a conversion relay where teams draw number cards and write each number in the two missing forms.

  4. Use state population figures and have students rewrite each population in expanded and word forms.
